Understanding the Supplement Facts Panel

Many dietary supplement products include a Supplement Facts panel or product information label describing serving size, ingredients and relevant usage information. The layout and available information may vary by product and package type. This guide applies to dietary supplements. Over-the-counter and prescription medicines use different labeling and directions. Always review the information provided for the exact product type.

Key Elements to Identify

Before using a new supplement, review the applicable information shown on the product package.

  • Serving Size: Shows the listed amount considered one serving, such as a number of capsules, tablets or scoops.
  • Servings Per Container: Shows the number of servings listed for the package.
  • Amount Per Serving: Lists nutrient or ingredient amounts for one serving. A Daily Value percentage may be shown where applicable.
  • Other Ingredients and Allergen Information: Review the complete ingredient information and any allergen statement shown on the package. Allergen information may appear within the ingredient list or in a separate ‘Contains’ statement.
  • Directions or Suggested Use: Review any manufacturer directions or Suggested Use information provided on the label, including serving frequency, timing and whether the product should be taken with food or water.
  • Storage Conditions: Follow the storage and handling instructions shown for the exact product.

Precautions and Expiration Information

Follow any expiration or best-by information and manufacturer guidance shown on the product package. Review precautionary statements concerning allergies, pregnancy, nursing, medical conditions and possible interactions. Do not use the product if its seal is damaged, its packaging is compromised or the product appears altered.

Safety Tip: Keep supplements in their original packaging and store them securely away from children and pets. If you experience a suspected adverse reaction, stop using the product and seek medical care or advice.
